Founder, A115

The most expensive problem on a trading desk is never a bad trade. It's the revenue you don't know you're missing.

I founded A115 in 2011. Through A115, I've spent over a decade building the production trading infrastructure behind some of Europe's most active desks: Shell, Centrica, and Limejump. Not proofs of concept. Systems that reconcile real P&L, meet regulatory deadlines, and run in production every day.

That experience taught me something that shapes everything A115 does now: most mid-market desks are leaving half the revenue stack on the table. They trade day-ahead only, because accessing intraday, BM, and ancillary revenue safely requires operational infrastructure they don't have, and enterprise ETRM is priced for desks ten times their size.

The problem I keep seeing

A 50 MW BESS or wind desk trading day-ahead only is leaving £1-2M per year on the table. They know it. But accessing the full revenue stack (intraday, balancing mechanism, ancillary services) requires explainable P&L, automated compliance, and operations that lenders and auditors will trust. Enterprise ETRM costs £100-500k/year with a 6-12 month implementation. Spreadsheets aren't auditable or compliant. For a 20-500 MW desk, there has been nothing in between.

That's the gap A115 closes. We build the operational assurance infrastructure that sits between the ETRM and the trading desk, so the desk can safely access revenue streams that were previously out of reach.

The urgency is real. Under REMIT II, a typical renewables or BESS desk using algorithmic strategies now generates dozens to hundreds of reportable events daily. Manual compliance with spreadsheets is operationally unworkable at scale. The desks that solve this now will capture the revenue. The ones that wait will keep paying the gap.

How we work

Most relationships start with the Power Desk Score, a free self-assessment that maps a desk's operational capability against the full revenue stack. It takes under 10 minutes and gives a clear picture of where the gaps are.

From there, the Operational Leakage Assessment quantifies the revenue being left on the table: settlement errors, unoptimised dispatch, compliance overhead, optimiser underperformance. Delivered as a prioritised roadmap in three weeks.

For desks that need to move, the Readiness Programme builds the full operational infrastructure (explainable P&L, REMIT II and EMIR compliance, position reconciliation, settlement assurance) to audit-ready in 90 days. After go-live, Desk OS, Managed Close, and the Compliance Evidence Pack keep it running without increasing headcount.

Where this comes from

Shell Energy

Built multi-layer P&L reconciliation spanning front, middle, and back office across six trading desks: real-time fast P&L for traders, human-estimate layers for judgment calls, and official reconciled P&L for finance. Designed unit-of-measure standardisation across TTF, THE, PEG, and NBP so positions could be compared across markets that measure gas differently. Automated EMIR and REMIT compliance reporting. Integrated with FIS Aligne and OpenLink Endur, bridging bespoke trading tools with the enterprise platforms they have to coexist with.

Centrica

Built the market data and position infrastructure processing 100,000+ transactions per minute. The operational backbone for one of the UK's largest energy trading operations. Real-time analytics across trading, risk, and settlement, pulling from highly diverse data sources and making it available to trading desks, ML teams, and risk analysts in near real-time.

Limejump

EPEX SPOT and N2EX day-ahead trading automation for a fast-scaling independent generator. Full exchange integration built from scratch, in production, handling live settlement.

Each of these taught me something different. Shell taught me that full-lifecycle P&L reconciliation is where most desks silently leak revenue. Centrica taught me what happens when you design for today's volume instead of next year's. Limejump taught me how to move fast without cutting the corners that matter.
